It is an excellent printer for the 17 inch width printers.
My last purchased printer was the Epson 3880 - around 2 years ago. In fact, he has been helpful for me on different issues other than the 1400. He has excellent knowledge, also for the 1400 and is a very helpful person. I would encourage you to accept the offer for photos of the 1400 as per the other post.
Not enough room and it basically requires an "almost complete" dis-assembly of the entire print unit in order to gain access to the required area. Any recent Epson models any good for larger format width (between 13" and 19")? Might try to fix or might just get a new printer. It does look complicated and difficult to adjust (there's not enough room to fit my hand back there). It indeed is an issue with the belt banging around when the print head is moving. If it seems to be detached, meaning you are not sure where or how it should be located - post back here and I will set about taking a few shots of my 1400 to show the cable. Make sure you have a decent bright light to see exactly what you are watching. That way you can watch as you move the printhead gently side to side manually and with a bit of luck, you will spot what needs to be done to "cure" the problem.
That's the right way to work - as Vernon described. Normally, the belt is in a specific holder on back of the print unit and is rather complicated to try to work on this to make repairs. If it does NOT move in sync with the print unit, it is most likely NOT attached to the print unit. If it is, it may just be positioned wrong for the normal travel left to right. NOTE: The above details is intended to be helpful for you to determine if the "Belt" is NOT attached to the print unit. I would NOT recommend doing this since it was not an easy and/or logical repair - even though it did function properly after completing and allowing the glue to dry. Proper alignment is definitely required for the printer to work properly I did this and the attachment area had part of it broke (or missing) so I applied special type glue to repair - AFTER determining the EXACT place on the belt to be attached to the print unit. You could press the ink change button and allow the print unit to move to the change area - then, unplug the printer from the AC wall plug - you can now move the print unit "gently" back and forth (left and right) to check if the belt is attached to the print unit. However, This MAY or may NOT be the problem with your printer. Also, the belt would move some but was not in synchronization with the print unit - since it was not attached. The print unit would move back and forth but would hit (bang) against the left side. I had an issue a few years ago with one of the previous Epson Model printers where this Belt came loose (dis-attached) from the unit holding the print cartridges. I believe the function of that belt is basically the "Timing Belt" for the print unit as it travels back and forth across the carriage movement. I do not have the 1400 but most desktop Epson printers have similar "ribbons as you have described" that when functioning properly are attached to the back assembly holding the ink Cartridges and has the print head underneath.

Anyone know how to fix this sort of issue? Dunno what started to cause this. It is getting pushed under the print head as the print head moves across instead of behind. Opened the top and saw that the ribbon cable (not sure if that's the correct term for it) that's connected to the print head is not moving normally. Tried to print something with my Epson 1400 the other day and heard a funny noise when the print head was moving back and forth.
